CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Oral Generic Phentermine Hydrochloride (HCL) is used for weight loss. It is in the Sympathomimetic family of appetite suppressants (used for the short-term management of exogenous obesity.) What is Generic "Phentermine" PRESCRIBED For?
It is prescribed for reducing weight in obese patients when used short-term and combined with exercise, diet and behavioral modification.
How Should I Take Generic "Phentermine"?
Generic Phentermine should be taken on an empty stomach, once daily, prior to breakfast. If in tablet form, the tablet may be broken or cut in half. Do NOT break, crush, or chew tablets.
As Generic Phentermine may disrupt normal sleep patterns, avoid taking a dose late in the day. If taking more than one dose a day, take the last dose approx. 4-6 hours prior to going to bed.
The following information is specific only to the average doses of Generic Phentermine. The recommended dose of Generic Phentermine may be different for different patients. If your dose is different, do NOT change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Adults under Age 60
Oral dosage form (Capsules) - 15 to 37.5 mg once/day before breakfast or 1-2 hours after breakfast.
Oral dosage form (Tablets) - 15 to 37.5 mg once/day before breakfast or 1-2 hours after breakfast. Instead of taking it once a day, your doctor may tell you to take 15 to 37.5 mg in divided doses one-half hour before meals.
Oral resin dosage form (Capsules) - 15 to 30 mg once/day before breakfast.
Adults Age 60 and Over
A reduced dosage may be necessary. Consult your physician.
Infants and Children
Generic Phentermine is NOT recommended for children under age 16.
Do not keep outdated medicine past the expiration date.
Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Phentermine"?
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Generic Phentermine (or other appetite suppressants). You should inform your doctor if you suffer from, or have suffered from:
- Allergies
- Advanced Atherosclerosis
- Alcohol Abuse (or history of)
- Diabetes Mellitus (sugar diabetes)
- Drug Abuse or Dependence (or history of)
- Family History of Mental Illness
- Glaucoma
- Hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid)
- Kidney Disease
- Mental Illness
- Moderate to Severe Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Symptomatic Cardiovascular Disease
- The use of a Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 2 weeks
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the scheduled dose.
!!! Do not double the dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
If an overdose occurred call your local emergency and your health care professional immediately. The symptoms of an overdose include:
- Confusion
- Convulsions (seizures)
- Dizziness
- Fast Breathing
- Fever
- Hallucinations
- Hostility with urge to attack
- Irregular blood pressure
- Irregular heartbeat
- Lightheadedness or Fainting
- Mental Depression, following a period of excitement
- Tremors, Trembling, or Shaking
- Overactive Reflexes
- Panic
- Restlessness
- Severe nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Tiredness or Weakness
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Phentermine"?
Blurred vision, dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, stomach upset or constipation may occur the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. The main advantage of Generic Phentermine is that it suppresses the appetite; however, the drug also elevates the heart rate and blood pressure.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Phentermine"?
- Tell your doctor about all medications that you are taken, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal preparations.
- This drug should not be used with MAO inhibitors. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you which drugs are MAO inhibitors.
- Doses of drugs used to lower blood sugar may need to be adjusted. Talk to your doctor for more information.
- Taking Generic Phentermine with certain antidepressants (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft) can increase chances of an emergency condition called "serotonin syndrome". For more information on drug interactions with Generic Phentermine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
- Talk to your doctor about using this medicine during pregnancy or nursing to discuss any possible risks to you or your baby. Do NOT breast feed while taking this medicine.
Additional Information
Generic Phentermine should NOT be used as a substitute for proper diet or exercise. For maximum effects, it must be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and/or exercise.
Any modifications in your diet, activity level, and behavior must be developed and continued long-term in order to continue losing weight and prevent the lost weight from returning.
As Generic Phentermine is similar chemically to amphetamines, taking Generic Phentermine may cause a positive result in urine screening tests for amphetamines.
